It is absolutely true that we are living in the end times, as John calls it, “the last hour” (1 John 2:18). Christ Himself says of this that He is “coming soon” (Revelation 22:20). See also Rev. 22:7 and Rev. 22:12. Paul says that “the God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet” (Romans 16:20). He also says, “it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we first believed” (Romans 13:11). Consider also, “therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (Matthew 24:44).
Peter says, “the end of all things is at hand” (1 Peter 4:7). Consider also these words, “Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near” (Revelation 1:3). Also, “You must also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (Luke 12:40).
I would argue that people have indeed fallen asleep and need the harrowing words of “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 3:2), instead of the cradlesongs so many of the preachers of today are singing with honey lips concealed as “sermons.” Far too many are being lulled to sleep instead of shaken to action. The watchman at the walls have grown tired, but the King is at the gate. The virgins have all started to dream, carried off into the dreamworld, but the Ancient of Days is knocking. The children of God have all forgotten, laying their heads down on their pillows, but the King of Kings and Lord of Lords is closing the door to the marriage feast.
If an entire generation “wastes” their time only concerned with His return instead of building beautiful things and sending our kids to beautiful schools, and buying beautiful toys to occupy our meaningless time, it would be a better generation than the one we have now.
Let us preoccupy our time with what matters most, getting as many in the ark as we can – it is starting to rain.
